Fun friends - making our houses using natural materials

We have been talking about how although we are all different, we do some things and have some things that are the same as others.
Here are the houses we made using things we could find under the big tree by our playground. We all have a roof and a mailbox, some of us have a tramp and a garden.

Fun Friends teacher Training

Today Mrs Derrick, Mr Harris, Miss Brown and Mrs Redden took part in teacher training for the Fun Friends programme that we will be starting soon.
It is a fantastic programme and we are very excited to implement it throughout the school, with the middle and seniors taking part in 'Friends for Life' as well.

Please check out http://www.funfriends.org.nz for more information about Fun Friends!

Term 3 Art Project

We have been busy working all term on our contribution to the school art project - we started with draft pictures of 'Anything' pictures, then 'Present' pictures and finally 'Future' pictures. We then painted our 'Present' picture of us at school onto the wood panels that we spent an afternoon sanding, then oiling. We helped Whaea Alice with stripping the harakeke flax a few weeks ago, and she will be carefully hanging all of the panels with Steve in the next week so the Art can be unveiled on Thursday at a special dedication in the hall.

Museum Trip

The junior school had a fantastic visit to the Canterbury Museum on Thursday.
We went there as part of our POGI (Programme of Guided Inquiry) Topic of 'We are who we are'. We have been talking about where we come from and what is special to us.
At the museum we spent time looking at treasures in the Discovery Room, exploring the museum and then having a lesson with the Museum Teacher, Anthony, about Maori Taonga (Treasures).

The junior school had a shared lunch for our Programme Of Guided Inquiry Provaction on Friday.
Each class made decorations that are represented cultures from our school and we ate food from different cultures.

Room 7 made Rice Balls from Japan. Here are some pictures and sentences that Room 7 students made about each picture.

End of Topic Study trip to Orana Park

Our fantastic Zoo School Teachers!
To consolidate our learning this term for our Programme of Guided Inquiry (POGI) topic, the junior school visited Orana Wildlife Park (http://www.oranawildlifepark.co.nz/) on Thursday. The children were extremely excited for the entire trip, especially when we were able to see many animals so close to us. We saw a number of animals including Meerkats, Lemurs, Lions, Tigers, Zebra, Spider Monkeys, Cheetahs and Rhinos. We were lucky enough to be able to feed the Giraffe and Roldo the Llama!
Thank you to Carol and her team at Orana Wildlife Park for an unforgettable experience.
